Happy Friday! Thank Atheist God, we survived another week...unless you're Tyre King.

Greetings, fellow Dot Calm Readers, Freedom Fighters, and Truth Crusaders!

Blawgging is an impossible job: the bad news comes in faster than I can track it. Like it says in the title, you and I and our loved ones survived the week, but 13-year-old Tyre King, shot dead by police, did not. I'm sure it was "a good death," as some conservative Republican bitch whose name I don't have time to look up at the moment (I tried but gave up) said about some other innocent, unarmed Black shot down like a dog just for having melanin in his skin.

I'm still, of course, desperately worried about the upcoming election. The Dems really need to get it in gear and knock Trump off balance. Keep nagging the media to do their jobs regarding all of Trump's crimes and scandals and don't let up until his campaign jumps the shark.

Sure, thank Atheist God, FiveThirtyEight still gives Hillary high likelihood of winning. But they also say she can't take victory for granted.

Meanwhile, I've been reading about her family leave plan and economic policies. Her family leave plan makes available twelve weeks maternity and paternity leave, and she plans to fund it in the most sensible possible way: by taxing the rich. This would continue the positive trend it took Obama eight years to create in which income inequality is finally, slowly, starting to shrink rather than grow. Obama succeeded--but just barely--by relying on outdated liberal techniques. And here's something else wonderful about Hillary: she's on top of the new stuff--fiscal and economic techniques that are quite promising for moving us in the correct direction with less lag than Obama experienced. Read it again: Hillary understands how to continue to shrink income inequality and grow the economy. Why? Because she has been observing and analyzing what has and has not worked since Reagan was in office--which was when income inequality started growing--up through the Great Recession and O'Bama's sluggish recovery, and she staffed her transition team with the right experts to undo more damage more quickly than even O'Bama could. Sure, it won't be perfect, and the approach will need to be refined over time, but it will continue to build on the goodness that Obama got rolling for us. But don't believe me--check out the Vox article below that spells out this stuff in living color.

And now contrast Hillary with Trump...

Contrast Hillary's thoughtful approaches, detailed plans, and experienced, qualified experts intent on helping us average American families with Trump's hot air bluster, Trump's non-plans consisting solely of words like "great" and "huge," and Trump's echo chamber advisors expert only in racism, bigotry, Islamophobia, misogyny, lies, spin, violence, scandal, grift, and telling Trump whatever he wants to hear in voices that sound just like his.

Srsly. Go look at each candidate's website and then tell me how in Atheist God's non-creation that anyone with two or more working neurons between their ears can possibly have even the slightest understanding of or confidence in anything Trump says or plans to do to us all.

Not a world I want to live in, friends. No sane person would. As Dot Calm quotes Camus in her profile, "It is the responsibility of every thinking person not to side with his or her executioner."

For me, that means not siding with Trump.

Don't forget to read Dot Calm's shadow's favorite independent sources of news and information:

From 350.org--200 ways to stand with Standing Rock Sioux against the Dakota Access pipeline

Friends,

This week has been incredible. I'm so proud to be part of this big, beautiful movement with you -- here's just the latest reason why:

On Tuesday, more than 200 actions were organized in just a few short days to show our collective solidarity with the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. From banner-drops in California to main-street rallies in small Midwest towns, to actions as far afield as London and Hawaii -- this movement truly came together to #StandWithStandingRock.

This week's largest rally, in Washington, DC, had over 3,000 people calling on President Obama to stop the pipeline (along with featured speakers like Senator Bernie Sanders, Tara Houska, Van Jones, Chase Iron Eyes, Rev Yearwood, and Jasilyn Charger).

Last week, President Obama blocked the final federal permit needed to build the pipeline. Now, the Administration has opened the door to using a more thorough review process, one that takes climate and tribal consultation into account, like Keystone XL.

You can still stand with the Standing Rock Sioux, who are leading this fight on the ground, by sharing the petition you signed to President Obama telling him to stop the pipeline with your friends and family.

Share the petition on Facebook now.

What’s happening right now in Standing Rock -- and the simultaneous landowner opposition gathering steam in Iowa -- is a historic display of resistance. In fact, one reporter commented that “the oil industry has never been more scared.”

This isn't the first pipeline we've fought together -- and it won't be the last -- but something special about the Dakota Access uprising has captured the country's imagination. The dedication, moral clarity, and brilliant organizing on the part of Native tribes and Indigenous-led organizations is that something special.

The actions this week have been a powerful show of solidarity, but this fight is definitely not over. Let's keep showing up and standing with the Standing Rock Sioux and everyone fighting this thing on the ground. Right now, the best way to do that is to add your voice:

Share this petition to President Obama on Facebook and Twitter.

There's plenty more to do: Join one of the upcoming actions targeting financial institutions that are funding the pipeline here, contribute to efforts on the ground via the Sacred Stone Camp supply fund, the Sacred Stone Camp legal defense fund, or the Red Warrior Camp legal defense fund, or contribute to farmer and landowner organizing efforts in Iowa here.

Dakota Access hasn't seen the last of us. Together, we can stop this pipeline -- and every pipeline after it.

Thank you for everything you do,

Emily for the rest of the 350.org team

P.S. Check out some of the social media from this week's #StandWithStandingRock day of action here, and see the best photos from actions around the country here.

Update from Public Citizen

Wow.

In a jaw-dropping abuse of power, Senator Mitch McConnell is trying to cripple the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

That’s the watchdog agency first proposed by Elizabeth Warren to protect Main Street from Wall Street after the Big Banks nearly destroyed the global economy.

The CFPB just fined Wells Fargo $185 million for opening millions of credit and debit card accounts in the names of actual people — who didn’t know about or authorize the accounts.

Now, take a guess:

Which member of Congress reports the most stock in Wells Fargo, one of the banking behemoths whose recklessness the CFPB was created to counteract?

That’s right, Mitch McConnell.

In his latest public financial filing, Mitch McConnell reports more than $1 million in Wells Fargo stock owned by his wife, who sits on the bank’s board of directors.

Using a procedural trick, Mitch McConnell is trying to ram through a bill that would sacrifice the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to Wall Street’s greed.

Tell Mitch McConnell: Keep your hands off the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Sign the petition now.

Thank you for taking action TODAY.

Onward,

Robert Weissman

VoteVets

Jason Kander could have gone anywhere after law school.

He chose Afghanistan.

Shortly after he returned, he was elected to the Missouri state legislature and then as Secretary of State, where he's rooted out corruption just like he did as his job when he served overseas.

Now he's running against Republican Senator Roy Blunt, who lied to his constituents about Vietnam draft deferments and then voted against increasing benefits for veterans who actually served. It's time for Senator Blunt to go.

Watch our latest ad and contribute $3 to VoteVets so we can elect progressive veteran Jason Kander to the Senate and defeat a man who voted for the war in Iraq and against increasing the benefits for those who served there.

Of course, we are going to continue doing everything we can do to stop Donald Trump. But we also have to protect against ultra-conservative attempts to privatize veterans' health care in the Senate.

This is a big ad buy for such a close race, and the message is powerful. It's going to make a difference. Make your $3 contribution to VoteVets, and as you watch the results come in on election night, know that your donation could be the difference.

This race could be the most important race of all the 2016 Senate campaigns.

All our best,

- The team at VoteVets

Bayer's neonics want to join with Monsanto's GMOs.

Many bees

Save bees from this toxic merger.

sierrarise-button-sign-share

Greetings--
Today, Monsanto agreed to Bayer's $66 billion takeover bid.1 The combined company -- the world's largest seed and pesticide maker -- would threaten the health of honey bees around the world.
Monsanto produces Roundup, in addition to genetically-engineered seeds designed to withstand the herbicide. Bayer manufactures neonicotinoid pesticides, which have been implicated in bee die-offs.2
It's already tough to be a honey bee, with all the pesticides, mites, and fragmented habitat. If the new company engineers crops to tolerate heavy applications of neonicotinoids, it could become impossible.
A Monsanto-Bayer merger would be a disaster for bees. Halt this conglomerate before it gets out of control.
Not only would Monsanto-Bayer eliminate competition and drive up prices3 -- it would also consolidate political control over our food and agricultural policies.
Monsanto has funded campaigns to block the movement to label GMOs.4 Bayer has funded the American Legislative Exchange Council.5 Both have intertwined their businesses with the government.
In order to protect pollinators like bees, neonicotinoids and other harmful pesticides will need to be phased out of use. If companies don't do it voluntarily, we'll need the government to act. That ban will be even harder to enact when more of our food system is controlled by a single entity.

In it together,

Alexander Rony

From Daily Kos--Close the "carried interest" tax loophole for the rich

Should hedge fund billionaires pay lower taxes than working families?
The "carried interest loophole" is an egregious symbol of how Wall Street billionaires have rigged the political system for their own benefit—and it's about time that we had it abolished.
Closing the tax loophole would generate a minimum of $1.8 billion per year—enough to replace all of the contaminated pipes in Flint, Michigan, or to pay for public college tuition for nearly 200,000 students a year.
Despite broad and bipartisan support, Congress refuses to act. But with elections around the corner, now is the time to hold them accountable—or make them lose in November.
Sign the petition to Congress: Close the "carried interest" tax loophole for billionaire money managers.
Keep fighting,

From Union of Concerned Scientists via Daily Kos--Stop tropical deforestation now!

Tropical forests, often wild and untouched, are relentlessly being cut and torched in South America primarily to make room for beef production. Tropical deforestation is responsible for 10 percent of all global warming emissions, not to mention obliterating critical habitats of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. But large multinational companies have the power to help end the destruction.

Sign and send the petition from the Union of Concerned Scientists and Daily Kos to these companies to tell them: Enough is enough; they must do their part to end tropical deforestation today.

A new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists shows 13 companies—Burger King, ConAgra, Hormel, Jack Link’s, Kroger, Mars, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Pizza Hut, Safeway, Subway, Walmart, and Wendy’s—currently all fail to guarantee their beef products, such as Jack Link’s beef jerky and Burger King’s hamburgers, are deforestation-free.

While reducing your personal beef consumption can reduce your individual climate impact, companies would have a much bigger impact, as the direct purchasers of beef, if they adopt strong, science-based, deforestation-free policies and practices and work with their suppliers to implement them.

Sign and send the petition from the Union of Concerned Scientists and Daily Kos to these companies to tell them: Enough is enough; they must do their part to end tropical deforestation today.

Keep fighting,
Rachel Colyer, Daily Kos

Keith Olbermann reading off Donald Trump's most outrageous statements in a 17-minute-long video. Ah, Keith...Dot Calm just luuuurved you! And so do I.
...Holy wow. Allz I can say is, "Damn, son!!"

Here's Seth Meyers's take on Donald Trump's charitable (to him) foundation:

Here's Stephen Colbert's take on the Trump Foundation:

Here's another goodie from Stephen about Dr. Oz's softball to Trump. How disingenuous and self-serving can you get? Oz pushes discredited voodoo medicine; Trump pushes discredited conspiracy theory bullshit; I wouldn't trust or believe either of them farther than my partially disabled dad could throw them. Here's the summary from Stephen's clip: "When the 70-year-old Republican nominee looks in the mirror, he sees a man half his age staring back. And somewhere in the attic, there's a portrait twice his age." What's even funnier is that Trump thinks that "at least you know what's in [fast food]"...to which Stephen quips that the only thing we know even less about than what's in fast food is what's in Donald Trump's tax returns.

And now...didja miss him? Didja? I did!
