The self-hatred is strong with these MAGA people...
In my last post, I wrote about how the evil that MAGA people wish on others is what they inwardly think they deserve to have happen to themselves.
How is that even possible--why would they think that?
I am taking an online meditation course taught by B. Alan Wallace. In the second lesson, he discusses Western self-hatred, self-contempt, self-loathing, and poor self-esteem.
He claims that this mental illness stems from multiple sources--not just one.
I agree.
However, I strongly suspect that there is one fundamental source that provides fertile soil for the other sources to take root and blossom: Christianity.
Not even Judaism teaches the intensity of "you are worthless without god, and you deserve to burn in Hell no matter how good you are" self-loathing that Christianity does--remember, Hell, i.e., infinite punishment for finite crime including thought crime--was introduced by Jesus the meek and mild.
The death cult of Christianity has successfully brainwashed its followers for millennia into thinking that they were worth less than worms.
In the worthlessness that Christians imbibe, today's preachers and right-wing media sell self-worth in the form of hatred and bigotry, and corporations sell self-worth in the form of shiny, expensive, new houses, cars, clothes, and amusements--amusements that are often necessary to dull the pain of perceiving oneself as worthless.
In other words, Christianity brainwashes its adherents into thinking they are worthless; then, utterly convinced of their worthlessness, Christians self-medicate with consumerism and hatred of others to escape the pain inflicted by their religion.
Other escapes include indulging in cognitive dissonance, magical thinking, and other forms of willful self delusion--all fomented by religion, FOX "News" and right-wing talk radio, and the corporations that all have something to sell sell sell sell.
Alas, the hatred that MAGA people feel for themselves is exactly what they radiate outward to the rest of society and the world.
No wonder there was a smiling woman at trump's tiny penis parade who proudly wore a yellow shirt that mocked the refugee father and daughter who drowned in each other's arms as they sought asylum here.
No wonder MAGA people blame those more powerless than they for their own perceived failures.
No wonder they think to themselves that innocent children in cages deserve to be locked up in conditions worse than the Geneva Convention establishes as reasonable for adult prisoners of war who signed up to commit mass murder on behalf of their governments.
No wonder they celebrate the cruelty inflicted by their own grievously mentally ill, putinist puppet in the White House on those who haven't the means to fight back. No wonder others' suffering gives them a gleam in the eye, a tight-lipped self-satisfied smile, and a wicked hard-on.
Remember, dear ones: for as much as these MAGA people hate you and me and the rest of the world, they hate themselves more.
Like the vicarious redemption their Jesus offers, the suffering that Republicans inflict on "the other" is the vicarious punishment that America's Christians are convinced they deserve themselves.
I see a lot of people on Twitter lately lamenting the behavior of these cruelty-hungry MAGA people, asking, "How do we get through to these people?"
I wish I knew.
However, I suspect that a good start would be to figure out how to teach them first and foremost to start loving themselves and treating themselves with compassion and kindness.
Perhaps then, we could start making inroads into releasing them from their delusions that their enemies are the weak and powerless rather than the rich and powerful and that they themselves deserve every calamity they currently celebrate being meted out on those who deserve our compassion, our comfort, and our aid.
Perhaps, if we could convince America's Christians first and foremost that they literally deserve to be happy--despite whatever their god, their holy book, their preachers, and their favorite TV channels say--then we might be able to start healing this shattered, polarized society of ours.
It's worth a try. We have literally nothing to lose and perhaps our society, our accountability, our respect on the world stage, and our democracy to regain.
Happy America's Birthday, y'all.

P.S.--if you're wondering why I haven't been blogging in a while, it's because my dad had another UTI in March, which means another several weeks in hospital and rehab, and then, in May, I came down with shingles myself. Shingles is damned nasty--it was so painful I couldn't move for weeks, so my poor dad was largely on his own. It's July now, and I am STILL recovering--so GET THE SHINGLES VACCINE NOW, dear ones!!!!!
