Where is that Dutch kid when you need him?
Remember the Hans Brinker childrens story of The Silver Skates? Well, we kids didn’t know the story by its formal title, we just called it the little boy who plugged the dike with his finger.
We didn’t particularly care that the fictional tale described life in Holland. We just thought it was pretty neat that this kid could plug a whole freaken dike (levee) with his finger!
There were a couple of times in this country’s recent history when we really needed that Dutch kid! He would have been the hero of Katrina. He surely would have showed those civil engineers with their fancy schmantzy titles a thing or two.
Now there is the matter of untold gallons of crude oil muckying up our beautiful Gulf coast. The French Quarter? It will never be the same. The Gulf coast? We’ll see.
