Americans owe more on college loans—$1.2 trillion—than they carry in credit card debt.

In fact, rising student loan costs and spiraling tuition are making it harder and harder for working families to send their children to college.

The Senate this week took up legislation that would let student loan holders take advantage of falling interest rates.

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-VT, cosponsored that bill by Senator Elizabeth Warren.

He has also proposed another way to make college more affordable: let high school students enroll in college classes so they may graduate sooner and save on tuition.

“Colleges must control costs and the federal government must provide the necessary assistance so every person in this country, regardless of income, can get a college education,” Sanders said.
