What is Going On in This Country?
The owner of a small Jewish publication in Atlanta is resigning over a column he wrote suggesting Israel might consider a hit on President Barack Obama.
Editor’s Comment: This country survived the assassination of a president in the 60s. I was a young mother at the time. I hadn’t voted for President Kennedy, but the fact that he was father to two small children moved me deeply. I began watching his press conferences early on in his presidency. He was respectful whenever he called on Helen Thomas, an old Palestinian reporter. President Kennedy was quick-witted and smart. His press conferences were a pleasure to watch.
Interim editor John McCurdy said Monday that Andrew Adler is relinquishing his day-to-day duties at The Atlanta Jewish Times.
Adler wrote Jan. 13 that Obama's assassination could be one of Israel's options in preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons. He was roundly condemned by national and local Jewish groups after larger media outlets reported on his column.
McCurdy says Adler has apologized in interviews and plans to publish an apology in the next edition. It's unclear if Adler will sell the newspaper.
U.S. Secret Service spokesman Max Milien says the agency is following up on the matter.
Editor’s Comment: Assassination is not a matter to be taken lightly. As recently as one year ago, Gabrielle Giffords was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt that left six innocent people, including a child, dead.
